The Treehouse Approach™

Two layers. Treehouse 1.0 is plain, proven tutoring craft — the thing you're paying for on a Tuesday night. Treehouse 2.0 (the TLC layer) is the mentoring work around it: attention, emotions, and how to use AI without letting it think for you. Both are published here in full.

Standard tutoring, done properly

Nothing exotic here — just the techniques that decades of tutoring and learning research agree on, applied every session. The student does the work; we make sure it's the right work.

  • The student practices; we don't perform. Skills develop in the hands of the person holding the pencil. We resist doing the problem for them, even when it's faster.
  • Lead with questions. “What is this problem asking?” “What do you already know?” A well-placed question teaches more than a well-delivered explanation.
  • Guide the problem-solving process, not just the answer. We model how a confident problem-solver thinks out loud, then hand the thinking back.
  • Break complex problems into smaller pieces — step by step. Every hard problem is several easy ones wearing a trench coat. We teach the decomposition explicitly, as a repeatable technique.
  • Gauge exactly where the skill gap is. The first session maps where the student currently falls short, so we're working on the actual missing rung and not the symptom.
  • Fundamentals before harder problems. Shaky fractions sink algebra; shaky algebra sinks calculus. We check the foundation before building on it.
  • Study techniques most students aren't using. The basics with the strongest evidence: spaced repetition, retrieval practice (self-testing), interleaving, and worked examples.
  • Plus the newer, validated methods. Where the research has moved on — desirable difficulties, elaborative interrogation, the testing effect — we bring it in and say which is which.

    Find the sticking point

    Where is the student struggling right now, and what are the goals — tonight's assignment, Friday's quiz, the semester grade?

    Supervised learning and practice

    The student works; we sit alongside as a role model for basic problem-solving, asking the questions they'll eventually ask themselves:

    “What variable am I trying to isolate?” · “What are all the options I can try?” · “What do I already know?” · “Can my experience with a familiar problem apply here?”

    Final questions, then get ahead

    Any last questions, then a look at what's coming next in the course. We usually leave the student with a short set of notes — an algorithm for the chapter of math they're currently in, in their own words as much as ours.

The extras: mentoring around the math

Most tutoring companies treat their curriculum as a trade secret. We think that's backwards: if a method works, publishing it makes kids better off and keeps us honest. This is the layer beyond standard tutoring — attention treated as trainable, foundational skills named, and every technique published as it's written.

Foundational methods

Before a student can learn calculus, they need three quieter skills: regulating emotions (frustration is where most math careers end), communicating clearly (asking a precise question is half of understanding), and a workable sense of identity — the difference between “I failed the quiz” and “I am bad at math.”

Every tutoring relationship spends some time here, whatever the subject on the whiteboard.

ADHD-mitigation techniques library

A growing, open-sourced collection of techniques that work with a distractible brain instead of against it: body doubling, externalized working memory, interest-anchoring, timed sprints with real rest.

Written from lived experience, not a pamphlet. Free for any family or teacher to use, whether or not they ever book with us.

Attention is trainable

Research puts the average sustained attention on one task at about 47 seconds and falling. We treat focus like strength training: progressive overload, deliberate rest, measured over weeks. The “how to sit still” module is this philosophy in miniature.

Our stance on AI

64% of teens already use chatbots; a fifth use them when they're upset. Banning the tool teaches nothing. We teach students to use AI to check their thinking, never to skip it — and how to notice the difference in themselves.
